Veena Ramphul, restaurant artisan, Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury: “I do the best job in the world”

Social media

Veena Ramphul joined the Royal Palm in May 1994 as waitress. Patient and passionate, inclined to learn, she improved her skills in restaurant service thanks to knowledgeable butlers in Mauritius and abroad. Twenty-five years down the road, she is today an accomplished restaurant artisan who holds the satisfaction of the clients at heart and strives to make their stay so memorable that they would want to come back.

“When I finished school, I had just one wish in mind – start my career at an early age. I immediately joined the restaurant sector and I fell in love with the job.” Veena started as waitress. Today, she is a restaurant hostess and masters the ABCs of setup and service.

Married to Vikash for 21 years, Veena is a mother of three. She had the chance to learn the job from experienced butlers but also internal training opportunities.

“At first it was tough. But with time, I found my bearings. I became a true professional and I managed to juggle with my professional duties and my roles as mother and wife.” The training that she underwent was thorough. “I had the chance to do internships in huge castles in France such as the Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez. I also followed a course at the Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz in 2005 under the supervision of professionals,” she recalls.

The Château de la Messardière is a 5-star hotel that oversees Saint-Tropez. Its terrace and its restaurant offer a splendid view on the bay of Pampelonne and the quality of its service is highly praised. Veena brought these best practices to Royal Palm where she enhanced her skills. She has an early start. At 6.30 a.m., she is all set. “To ensure that the setup is perfect and allocate the various tasks to the artisans so that they can finish on time, that is 7.30 a.m. Many clients prefer early breakfasts.”

Satisfy the clients. This is her number one priority. And if she manages to do so, it has also to do with the fact that she feels that she is doing the best job in the world. She knows that the restaurant business brings joy to people, regardless of their age, gender or social class. “Yes, I have the best job in the world because I have the chance to meet amazing people and bring joy to clients. It’s a personal satisfaction to see the client leave happy with a desire to come back because the service was faultless.” Quality is one thing but there is also a bonus – a signature item – Royal Palm’s renowned hot chocolate made right in front of the client. “Here we make hot chocolate in front of the client. You don’t see this anywhere else. We heat the chocolate while adding cream and milk and top it up with grated chocolate to the delight of clients.”

If Veena has managed to strike the right balance, it is due to the fact that she found love at Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury and that her life swings nicely between her family and her workplace. “My husband and I met here. We know the needs of the job.” Veena has bloomed in her role as a wife and a restaurant professional. She and her husband share the same values and conveyed these values to their children. So much so, that their eldest son followed their footsteps and joined the personnel of a cruise ship.

Veena is pleased to see that attitudes evolve and that today women can also add their stone to the edifice. They are free to contribute to the success of their company and that of their family. “Yes, women have evolved and are more determined to reconcile their family and professional duties.”

The tough days are gone. Passion and motivation drove her and allowed her to quickly make her way in a world where men are often considered as role models. Veena moved out of the shadows and into the limelight. She found her path and her happiness. “True. I discovered the sumptuousness of this job. It’s with a happy heart that I work every day. The clients of Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury really like the service that I provide and this is encouraging. And I choose to be at the service of the client to make his stay as memorable as possible so that he comes back.”

Indeed, every day, it is with a happy heart that Veena starts her duty and contributes to making Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury a reference of the Beachcomber Group and the Mauritian hotel industry.
