La Brezza - Italian and simply delicious

Social media

Since its re-opening in October 2014, the Royal Palm Mauritius now has an Italian restaurant, La Brezza, run by Alessandro Morino. With its two terraces just a few yards from the lagoon, the six-star hotel’s new restaurant is named after the late afternoon breeze that often wafts in from the sea.

“The concept for the restaurant is rooted in my own childhood, when I was surrounded by the savours of Italy,” says Michel de Matteis, the Royal Palm’s Michelin-starred Executive Chef. “Sunshine food and a warm Mediterranean atmosphere fit well in Mauritius. Teaming up with Alessandro – who has a delightful Italian accent – for La Brezza means we can offer guests further choice.”

La Brezza, which uses quality ingredients available in Mauritius and imported from Italy, specialises in truly authentic Italian cuisine – good, straightforward cooking that compliments the superb food available in the Royal Palm’s two other restaurants, La Goelette and Le Bar Plage.

Originally from Piedmont, after his hotel-school training Alessandro Morino first practised his craft in restaurants in Turin. He then spent eight years working in San Francisco before moving on again to run the Paradis Hotel & Golf Club’s Italian restaurant. He spent eleven years there before being asked, at the age of 48 and with a wealth of experience behind him, to bring his personal touch to La Brezza.

“La Brezza seats thirty,” Chef Morino tells us. “Small enough to mean we can really look after guests and give them our personal attention. It has the same friendly and simple atmosphere as a trattoria and I always try to have a word with guests during or after their meal so that I can get to know them better – and talk about the food.”

With three specialities each day, part of the menu changing each week and the possibility of asking for dishes to be specially prepared – with a bit of advance notice – La Brezza is a delightful way of experiencing a real taste of Italy.

Everything is wonderfully fresh, from the pasta to the parmesan, the herbs and a variety of hams and seafood, served with that famous sprinkle of premium olive oil. And there are, of course, Italian desserts to round off the meal. Gustoso – really tasty!
